Discernment

“Let anyone with ears to hear listen.” (Luke 8:8)

Discernment is the development of skills for deep listening. Mary Magdalene demonstrates this quality of listening, the type that recognizes the divine encounter. She models this behavior through her anointing activity, even when the other disciples remain unsure as to the nature or meaning of her motives.

Here she is depicted with the eyes of the Pentocrator: seeing at one time, both the present and eternal.
